(Part 1)

Here we are, in a world and a country that keep getting scarier. Everyone, especially queer people and ESPECIALLY trans people, should have some important legal documents set up for themselves, to be clear about who can and can't make decisions on your behalf, and what your wishes are if you are incapacitated. 

This Part 1 workshop took place on January 28th, 2025. Use the right-hand side of this page to get access to the RECORDING of this workshop! In the workshop, we: 

• Learned about the components of an estate plan: your will, power of attorney, medical proxy, living will, guardianship; 
• Thought through which people you want to ask to fill which role; 
• Planned out how to have the important and tricky conversations that you need to have with your loved ones, so that we can fulfill these important legal roles for each other! 

In Part 2 on February 25th (recording available here!), we: 

• Did a quick recap of Part 1; 
• Went through FreeWill.com step-by-step to write a last will & testament, advance healthcare directive, and durable financial power of attorney; 
• Set in motion a plan to finish and notarize these documents, so that it actually gets done! 

I'm not a lawyer, I'm just a queer financial professional who wants you to understand the basics, and set up anything you can to protect yourself and your family. If your situation is simple enough, you can write your own estate plan for free and get it notarized for $0 - $100. If your situation is more complex, you'll need a lawyer, but going through the education and decision-making process first can save you time (and therefore money) when you work with a lawyer.
